Getting to the top of the mountain

Unpacked boxes in basements, sitting there for years. An extra helping of stress on top the usual commotion when moving from one place to another: I see this day in and day out with our customers who have moved clutter around with them from place to place.

Often, we carry things with us that we don't need, use, or love in order to avoid the feelings of guilt or shame in letting go of them.

So what I tell my customers is this: imagine you are climbing a mountain. At the top is a peacefully decluttered home. You've been carrying a 100-pound stone on your back during this climb and you're exhausted and not sure if you can continue.

To leave the stone behind or to throw it off the mountain will cause you some uncomfortable feelings in your heart and stomach for about an hour. Maybe even some tears. And then the worst feelings will end. And the next day, they will be mostly gone.

But now, you can make it to the top of the mountain!

As much as you resent the stone and resent yourself for carrying it all this time, you can take a picture of it and release it to the universe with love.

And the view from the top of the mountain - peaceful. Serene. Priceless.
